Yuasa Town

Travel Information

Yuasa Town (湯浅) is one of the Edo Style Town with many traditional houses and established Soy Sauce Breweries. It is located in western Wakayama Prefecture. It is known as the birthplace of Soy Sauce. It was used to be also the part of the Kumado Pilgrimages Trail. There are many traditional houses that open as the restaurants, gift shops and museums. Of course, some of the soy sauce breweries are still doing their own business. Because of those traditional houses, this area is registered as the preserved scenery.

Yuasa Town
Yuasa had been developed as the castle town of Yuasa clan since Heian Period. In the middle ages of Japan, Kumano pilgrimages became so popular and this town became one of the trails to Kumano Shrines. During the Kamakura Period, one of the Buddhist priests went to China and learned how to make Miso. During the process of making Miso, he found out the Soy Sauce from the leftover of Miso producing.
