Matsushima

Travel Information

Matsushima (松島) is one of the three view of Japan, and located in Miyagi. Matsushima literary means "Pine Islands." So, there are about 260 small islands in Matsushima Bay. Many people had visited for long time. The famous Haiku Poet Matsuo Basho also visited here during his trip recorded in Narrow Road to the Deep North, and made great Haiku poems for Matsushima.

Matsushima

There are many ferry piers which have a tour of Matsushima Islands. All of the islands are named. Around the beaches side, you can access couple of islands to see what look like the inside of Matsushima Island.

Matsushima has a great fish food, especially clams and scallops. At the beach side, there are many food stands which serves fresh seafood.

Godaido is the most popular spots in Matsushima. It is the temple located on one of Matsushima Island. Originally, it was built in 807, and current building was built in 1604 by Date Masamune. It is one of the important cultural treasure of Japan. It has beautiful carving arts.

Uiganji Temple is one of the another popular spots in Matsushima. It is Matsushima's top Zen Temple with over a thousand years of history.
