The history of Sano castle has begun in 927. In 1180, the brother of the 9th lord of Oshu Fujiwara Naritoshi, became the castle lord of this castle and changed his family name to Sano. That is the origin of Sano city. Because Sano castle is located in a very important location, there are many Daimyo attacked this castle including Uesugi Kenshin, however, this castle defeated them. So, it was a very strong mountain castle.
Today, the main bailey has Karasawayama Shrine.
