Gensan Cave

Travel Information

Gensan Cave (源三窟) is a historic cave located Shiobara Onsen, Tochigi Prefecture. It is a historical site of Shiobara because the armors of Minamoto no Aritsuna were found in this cave. Inside of the cave has dolls to introduce the tragedy of Aritsuna. The cave is also combined with the samurai museum.

Tourist Info.
Admission: 700 yen for adult, 400 yen for kids.
There is parking, and restroom.
Open: 8:30 to 17:00 for summer, 9:00 to 16:00 for winter.

Gensan Cave

Total length is about 40m and you can enjoy unique rocks and waterfalls in the cave.

Legend said, Minamoto no Aritsuna the husband of Yoshitsune's daughter and also his samurai, hided here from Yoritomo when Yoritomo pursuing Yoshitsune to kill him. Aritsuna and Yoshitsune were separated from each others and Aritsuna hided here. However, when his soldier was polishing rice with the water of this cave, the white water was running out from the cave. The soldiers of Yoritomo found the white water and finally they caught Aritsuna.
