It began at Edo period, Edo was already the megacity at the 17th century. Many people came and lived from the countryside. They need to create new relationships and community. So, those new people in Edo started holding many festival to make a strong bond of solidarity. Not only Tokyo, all festival in Japan are designed and set to build strong community and society. Sumida River Fire Works (隅田川花火大会) has the one of the longest history of Fire Works. It started 273 years ago in Edo Period. There are two stages to fire 22,000 fire works in to the sky. In the 1st stage, there is Fire Works competition. 10 major fire works companies joined this competition. Each year, many fire works creators bring their new fire works. In the 2nd Stage, you can enjoy great fire work performances. This festival finished with about 3,000 Starmines at one time. Traffic will be control for this festival. All street around the stage will be only pedestrian. You can have a sheet on the street, so find your best spot for the greatest fire works.About 1 million visitors will visit this fire work festival. If you want to keep the better view spot, you might have to visit 3 hours before the show starts. 1,000,000 visitors
