Tomogashima Island (友ヶ島) is one of the popular travel spots located in Wakayama Prefecture. It is known as the island of Laputa, the famous Miyazaki Hayao's movie "Castle in the Sky." It was used to be the fortress of Japanese imperial army. Those ruins of the fortress that made from many bricks just look like the scenery of the castle in the movie. There are hiking courses that you can travel and see those ruins of the cannon batteries. You can actually walk around the castle here. It is also known as the popular BBQ and fishing spots.

Tomogashima Island
Floating on the Kitan straits of Seto-naikai National Park are Okinoshima, Jinoshima, Torajima, and Kamijima. Collectively these islands are known as "Tomogashima." These islands are a treasure chest of green fields, lush forests, fascinating insects, plants and animals, as well as rare rock formations. TOmogashima is a wonderful place to experience the wonders of nature. As well as being famous as the 1st of 28 spots for Buddhist ascetics on the Katsuragi pilgrimage, Tomogashima boats long list of Historical sites.

For the Meiji Period until the end of World War II the island served as an important military base and even today you can see the remains of old bunkers and powder magazines scattered over the islands. Anyone who visits these sites may feel as if they have slipped back in time. Viewing the beautiful scenery of the Seto Inland Sea from one of the white, western style lighthouses is sure to lighten the heart of even the most downtrodden spirit.
