Sensoji Temple (浅草寺) is a buddhist temple located in Asakusa. It is the main feature of Asakusa and one of the most popular tourist spot in Tokyo. Sensoji is also known as Asakusa-Kannon and about 30 million visitors visit every year. It was established in 628 and it's the oldest temple in Tokyo. Nakamise Street which is the shopping district located in front of Senseoji is one of the most famous tourist in Tokyo.

Sensoji Temple

Sensoji is Sokannon style Buddhism.
Sensoji was established in 628. The legend said Hinokuma Hamanari and Takenari brothers found a sacred Kannon statue at Sumida River. HajinoNakatomo recognized that statue was Shokanze-Kannon. He became the priest and established the temple.

In 645, priest Shokai visited the temple. He built the main building for Kannon, and wrote the rule of Buddhist. The rule has been kept by the priest of Sensoji over thousand years.

Asakusa becomes popular gradually year by year with believers. In Heian period, Priest Jigaku visited Sensoji, and gave another sacred image.

In Edo period, the 3rd Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu decided Sensoji as the government invocation place. He also built pagoda, main building and gates. With the millions of visitors for worshipping, Asakusa and Sensoji became the center of Edo Culture during Edo period.

Kaminari mon gate
... was built in 942 by Taira no Kinmasa. Fujin, the god of wind, and Raijin, the god of thunder, are the guardians from the disasters. Current gate was built in 1960.

Hozo mon gate
... was also built by Kinmasa. Tokugawa Iemitsu rebuilt new gate in 1649. Current gate was built in 1964.

Hondo, the Kannon Temple
... contains the sacred statue. Current building was built in 1958. The exterior of the temple was the same as the one which built by Iemitsu.

Five Stories Pagoda
Originally, it was built by Kinmasa. Iemitsu built new pagoda which was used to be a national treasure of Japan which was lost in WWII.

Yokodo
... was reconstructed in 1994 to commemorate the 1,200th anniversary of the birth of Ennin, the monk who established Sensoji. Inside, statues of Bodhisattva Kannon, and of 12 protective Buddhas, each assigned to a particular year of the oriental Zodiac cycle, are worshipped.
