The Original constructions of Karatsu Castle began in 1602 and took 7 years to complete. It was built by Terasawa Hirotaka, a former Samurai of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Following the Terasawa clan, the Okubo clan and later the Matsudaira, Doi, Mizuno and Ogasawara clan became the lords of the castle. In 1877, this castle was abandoned and opened as a park.
