Oldest Shrine in Niko

Futarasan Shrine (二荒山神社) is the sacred and oldest shrine of Nikko, Tochigi prefecture. It enshrines Mt. Nantai. In 767, Priest Shudo climbed up Mt. Nantai and built a shrine on the top of the mountain. This is the origin of Futarasan Shrine. Since then, Mt. Nantai became the sacred mountain and zone of Shugendo place. The area of Futarasan Shrine consists all mountains of Nikko including Kegon Falls. This is 2nd largest Shrine, next to the grand shrine of Ise, in Japan. Today, people still worship here for spiritual experience and its respect. All of the building are registered as the important cultural and historical assets. Because of its historical value, it is designated as the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There is parking and restroom.
The sacred garden: 200 yen for adult, 100 yen for kids.
Time: 8:00 to 17:00 (Nov. to Mar. 9:00 to 16:00

Futarasan Shrine was established in 767. It is the first Shrine of Shimotsuke land. Futarasan Shrine was highly respected as "Daikoku-sama of Nikko." Comparing to Nikko Toshogu Shrine that has many excellent buildings, Fuarasan Shrine has the beauty of the harmony of history and nature. The sacred area of Futarasan Shrine consists from all Nikko mountains including Kegon Falls, and that make it 2nd largest shrine in Japan.

Gohonsha, the main shrine, is located in the middle Nikko city. All of the buildings in Gohonsya are registered as the cultural and historical important assets and the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main building was constructed in 1619 by 2nd Tokugawa Shogun, Hidetada. It is the oldest building in Nikko.
