Shima literary means 40,000. It was named because people believed that the water of Shima Onsen cures 40,000 kinds of diseases.

Shima Onsen was found over 1,000 years ago, and Onsen Town was established around the middle of 16th century. Therefore, Shima Onsen considered as one of the oldest Onsen Town in Japan.


Free Public Onsen
They are available from 9am to 3pm.

Gomuso Onsen is located next to Yakushido Temple. This Onsen is the birthplace of Shima Onsen. There is also Foot Onsen.

Kawara no Yu is located right next to Shima river. Kawara literary means riverside.

Kaminoyu is located southern Shima Onsen. Because it is located out side of the center of Onsen Town, it is very quiet.

Yamaguchi Open Air Onsen is also located southern area of Shima Onsen. There are 4 different temperatures of Onsen. The dressing rooms are separated by men and women, but Onsen themselves are shared with both men and women.
