Mishima Grand Shrine

Mishima Grand Shrine (三嶋大社, Mishimadaisya) is one of the oldest Shrine located in Izu, Shizuoka. It appears in Japanese Myth. Many great worriers had respected Mishima Shrine especially Minamoto no Yoritomo. When he was banished to Izu, he prayed his victory at Matsuri of this shrine. He defeated Taira clan and built government of Shogun at Kamakura, later. From that legend, many Samurai donated their treasures for the success. Mishima Grand Shrine is the 1st shrine of Izu.

Mishima Grand Shrine

Enshrines: Ooyamatsuminomikoto and Tsumihayaekotoshironushinokami as Mishima Daimyojin.
Reitaisai: August 16 according to the legend of Minamoto no Yoritomo.

The nature of Japan had been always difficult for human to survive. Since ancient times, the Japanese have lived on grains, especially rice that is much inclined to depend on the right climate. Therefore, even a little change of climate has had a great influence on the lives of the Japanese people.

In ancient times people looked a the beauty of nature with admiration and held it in awe. As a result of belief in it and gratitude for it, the gods of Japan were formed in the hearts of the ancient Japanese people. To live together and in peace in a limited land, the Japanese dedicated a shrine to gods and never forgot the spirits of social solidarity, that is, unity makes the society stronger. So the grand shrine of Mishima is dedicated to bless the village people with a rich harvest and a big catch.

Mishima Shrine is located in the most northern extremity of Plains of Tagata, and since the Nara era, has been an imortant position of Tokaido.
