Arato castle (荒砥城) is a mountain castle located in Chikuma, Nagano. It was constructed in Muromachi Period. It was used to be a castle of Yamada clan. This castle was abandoned in 1584. The gates, walls, keeps and houses are reconstructed as in that time. It has typical structures of Japanese mountain castle.

There are parking and restroom.
Admission: 300 yen for adult. Free for under Junior high.
Time: 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry is 16:30)
Closed from: 12/29 to 1/3

Access
0. at Shinanoi Station.
1. use Shinano line to Tokuga Station.
2. walk west.

Arato castle

Type: Mountain castle.
Built in: 1524 by Yamada clan.
Class: Ruins.

Arato castle was built by Yamada clan who are samurai of Murakami clan about 400 years ago.
Murakami clan was the ruler of the land during Muromachi period. He defeated Takeda Shingen many times, but finally Takeda Shingen conquered this area and abandoned Murakami clan. After the battles of Kawanakajima, Uesugi Kenshin took over this castle but the castle lord Yashiro betrayed Kenshi. Later, Kenshin defeated this castle and Arato Castle was abandoned.

The gates, houses and keeps are restored.
