Sugimoto Temple

Travel Information

Sugimoto temple (杉本寺) is the oldest temple in Kamakura which built at 734.
In 1189, 3 buddha statue were protected by Japanese cedar from house fire. After that, temple was called Sugimoto Temple "Temple under Japanese cedar."
There is the stone steps of moss which is very beautiful green stone steps. Roof of the temple is the old style of Japanese temple.

Entrance fee: 200 yen, 100 yen for kids.
Open: 8:00 to 16:30

1. use Keikyu bus to Sugimotodera (15 min.)
2. walk North (1 min.)

Sugimoto Temple

There are Two Nio statues which made by Unkei, who is a Japanese sculptor of the Kei school, which flourished in the Kamakura period. He specialized in statues of the Buddha and other important Buddhist figures, in the gate.

Not like other standard Japanese temples, Sugimoto temple has very old style roof of temple. You could see what kinds of Japanese house were in the old period.
The stone steps of moss is one of the another unique feature of this temple.

In the main temple, 11 faces Buddha is enshrined.
