Matsushiro Castle (松代城) is a ruin of the castle located in Nagano city, Nagano. It is also called Kaizu ( 海津城). It is built by Takeda Shingen for the battle of Kawanakajima in 1560, and it became the castle of Matsushiro later by Sanada Nobuyuki. You can see the area of Kawanakajima and Mt. Saijo which gives you the great image of the battle of Kawanakajima.

Detailed Travel Guide for Matsushiro Castle

Type: Flatland
Built in: 1560
Class: Ruins

Record said, it was built by Yamamoto Kansuke for the protection of Kawanakajima area. Therefore, this castle contains lots of Koshu style face, and considered as one of Takeda's Castle. After the fall of Takeda clan, It becomes Oda's castle. However, when Nobunaga was killed at Honnoji in 1582, Uesugi Kagekatsu take over the entire Shinano area. But Hideyoshi ordered Kagekatsu move to Aizu. After the battle of Sekigahara, Sanada Nobuyuki, the brother of Yukimura, moved here in 1622.

Taikomon Gate
This gate is the biggest gate in Hon-maru and was used for security. It was faithfully rebuilt using the original cornerstones.
