Suzuki Original House
The Suzuki-homestead is the home, located in Fujishiro, Kainan, Wakayama Prefecture, reported being the place where the very first man in Japan bearing the surname Suzuki once lived. Currently, there are over 2,000,000 surnamed Suzuki living in Japan. It was near the end of the Heian Period (approximately in the middle of 12th century) a time when pilgrimages to the Kumano Grand Shrines by both retired and cloistered emperors was growing in popularity, and when the native of Kumano, Mr. Suzuki, relocated here to Fujishiro. It is said that he acted as a guide to the Kumano-sanzan, in order to shrines, that have helped define the entire Kumano-sanzan.

Of special mention are the two famous brothers Suzuki Saburo Shigeie, and Kamei Rokuro Shigekiyo, who are recorded to have met with Ushiwakamaru, as he was known during his childhood (later known as the legendary Minamoto no Yoshitsune). It is said that Ushiwakamaru stayed at this lodge, located near his route to and from Kumano, and it was during this stay that he played with both brothers in the nearby fields and valleys. Years later, both brothers accompanied Yoshitsune as his retainers, and though lost their lives in the battle of Koromogawa, it later became known there was one surviving warriors of the three; Shigeie. It was he that fled for the mountains of Akita Prefecture to settle, and though a samurai, returned to a life of farming. Yet, the historical account was maintained and continued when he succeeded a branch of the Suzuki family line and homestead to the town of Ugomachi. Presently, that specific place has been named an important cultural property.
