Sawayama Castle (佐和山城) is a mountain castle located in Hikone. It was built in Kamakura Period. Sawayama Castle is well know as the castle of Ishida Mitsunari. In 1590, Ishida Mitsunari moved this castle. This Castle was recognized as one of two unsuitable things for Mitsunari. Today, it is one of the popular hiking courses and from the top of the mountain. it has a beautiful view of lake Biwa.

Sawayama Castle

Sawayama Castle appears in the record of Kamakura Period.
In Sengoku Period, Sawayama Castle became the brunch castle of Azai clan. In 1571, this castle was defeated by Oda Nobunaga, and Niwa Nagahide became the lord of the castle.

After the Honnoji in 1582, Hori Hidemasa became the lord of the castle. In 1590, Ishida Mitsunare moved this castle and reconstructed the castle and built Tenshukaku on the top of the mountain.

Because this castle was so gorgeous, people told it was one of two disproportionate things for Mitsunari: "Shima no Sakon and Sawayama no Shiro."

After the battle of Sekigahara, this castle was defeated by Kobayakawa Hideaki and abandoned.
