Asuka Itabukinomiya is the ruins of imperial palace. Emperor (Empress) Kogyoku lived at this palace. Emperor Kogyoku ordered to built this palace in 643.
In 645, Nakano Oeno Oji, later Emperor Tenji, and Nakatomi no Kamatari, later Fujiwara no Kamatari, killed Soga no Iruka, the load of Soga clan, at this palace and took over the control of the government. This rebellion is called "Taika no Kaishin." Emperor Kogyoku abdicated the throne.
Itabuki means the wooden board roof. It was very new construction with wooden board roof at that time. In 655, this palace was burnt down and lost.
