Kainan Shrine

Kainan Shrine (海南神社) is one of the oldest shrine located in Miura peninsula. It is a very small shrine with many rich histories. This shrine was established in 866 to dedicate to Fujiwara no Sukemitsu who defeated the pirates around Miura Peninsula. When he died, people of Miura Peninsula built the shrine for him. Since then, it was highly respected by the people. There is a huge tree that legend said it was planted by Minamoto no Yoritomo. There is a famous festival called Chakkirakko that is registered as the UNESCO World Heritage.

There is no parkig or restroom.

Kainan Shrine
Enshrines: Fujiwara no Sukemitsu and his wife and local god.

Fujiwara no Sukemitsu is one of the novels from Kyoto. In 864, he arrived at Miura peninsula and become the governor of this region. He defeated all the pirates and created the stabilities in this region. In 866, he died and people built the shrine for him. In 982, the shrine removed to the current location became the top shrine of Miura Peninsula.

Since then, it became the protector of this region and highly respected by the people.

Chakkirakko is held on January 15.
