Subashiri Sengen Shrine

Travel Information

Subashiri Sengen Shrine (須走浅間神社) is the east side entrance of Mt. Fuji. The official name is Fujisan Higashiguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine (東口本宮冨士浅間神社). It was established in 807. In 802, Mt. Fuji erupted. The governor of Subashiri built an altar and prayed for the end of eruption. Then, in the same year, Mt. Fuji stopped its volcanic activity. People built a shrine at the altar. In Edo period, Subashiri became one of the popular climbing route of Mt. Fuji. Sengen Shrine became the post town and developed with the faith of Mt. Fuji. Today, it is registered as one of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Subashiri Sengen Shrine

Enshrine: Konohayasakuyabime no Mikoto, the goddess of Mt. Fuji.

Higashiguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine is one of Sengen Shrine that located at the entrance of Mt. Fuji. It is the entrance of Subashiri Climbing Route.

In 802, Mt. Fuji erupted and destroyed eastern side of Mt. Fuji. The governor of Subashiri at that time built an alter to pray bringing Mt. Fuji under control. Mt. Fuji stopped its eruption at the same year. People believed that was the power of the alter, and in 807, they built a shrine at the ruins of the alter.

In Edo period, the faith of Mt. Fuji became very popular, and many people visit Subashiri to climb up Mt. Fuji. The shrine and around village became the post town for the travelers.

It is designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At the museum, there is a letter of Takeda Katsuyori.

Retaisai: May 5.
Opening Mt. Fuji at July 1.
Closing Mt. Fuji at August 31.
